This year and next, no

This year or next, it would be impossible for the drug Remdesivir, for COVID-19 patients, to be produced in Romania, Health Minister Nelu Tătaru said. He said that a special production line is needed, which Romanian drug producers do not have.

On Thursday, in Timișoara, Minister Nelu Tătaru was asked why the Romanian state did not take steps, like the Hungarian, to obtain a license for the production of Remdesivir.

“We have had these discussions since the summer. We have the antibiotic factory where we had this discussion. It does not have a technological line and we have to obtain that patent, but we still do not have a technological line. It would be a long time to be able to produce this Remdesivir”, said Nelu Tătaru.

The Minister of Health specified that from July to September Romania had donations from the European Commission of almost 12,000 doses of Remdesivir, and in October there is a subsequent contract for another 12,000 doses, which will be directed to all support hospitals-COVID or the phase 1 and phase 2.

Tataru also said that the Romanian state supports these pharmaceutical companies to obtain a license and that on Wednesday a discussion took place at the government level with all Romanian drug producers and with mixed capital.

“They also requested that we provide them with facilities to be able to recondition their lines and have certain tax benefits under the conditions in which they do so,” Tataru said.

The Minister of Health was asked when he predicts that Romania will be able to produce this useful drug for COVID-19 patients.

“From what I spoke to drug manufacturers, this year and next, no. We need a technological line (…), it is a special line for the Remdesivir product, plus the patent. It is about the producer and our producers have certain technological lines and certain production in certain products ”, explained also Nelu Tătaru.
