During a visit to a military base in southern China’s Guandgdong province, President Xi Jinping ordered Chinese soldiers to “focus their minds and energies on preparing for war.”
In addition, Xi told the soldiers to “keep a high alert” and asked them to be “completely loyal, completely pure and completely trustworthy.”
The soldiers’ orders came against the backdrop of Xi delivering a speech in Guangdong to mark the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone (ZESS), created in 1980 to attract foreign capital.
ZESS has played a crucial role in transforming China into the second largest economic power in the world.
The visit to the Guangdong military base came amid growing tensions between China and the United States over the Taiwan issue. In recent months, a deep chasm has been created between Beijing and Washington.
On Monday, the White House informed the US Congress that it would sell three advanced weapons systems to Taiwan, a move that was not to the liking of the Chinese Communists. Beijung called for “the immediate cancellation of any arms sales to Taiwan and the severing of military ties between the country and Washington.”
Although Taiwan has never been a region controlled by the Communist Party of China, Beijing constantly sends messages that the area is part of its territory. There have been many occasions when Xi has hinted that the Chinese People’s Army can invade the island at any time.
In August, the Secretary of Health of the United States, Alex Azar, paid an official visit to Taiwan to discuss the disaster caused by the pandemic. He was the highest-ranking US official to visit the island in 40 years.
In response to the US gesture, China carried out military exercises near the island, using dozens of fighter jets, writes CNN.
