Although the metro line 5 was inaugurated a month ago, the first new trains for this route will arrive very late. Recently, the recruitment procedure was resolved in court. “We are going to sign the contract. The first one will be delivered in 24 months. We will have 13 new trains with the possibility of extending this contract,” declared the Minister of Transport, Lucian Bode, in the HotNews.ro LIVE interviews. Bode also spoke about the next metro line in Bucharest where the excavations will start and when it should be ready.

VIDEO – He talks about the subway from minute 53.06:

  • Lucian Bode: What has been achieved in 10 months of mandate, putting all the forces in the realization of the M5, getting it put in passenger traffic, is something extraordinary.
  • M5 has an expansion project, between Eroilor and Iancului Square. Here we are with the documentation on the procedure.
  • We want to complete the works on the M5 and on the surface and acquire the 13 new trains.
  • There the procedure was unblocked, the court ruled in our favor. We are going to sign the contract. The first will be delivered in 24 months. We will have 13 new trains with the possibility of extending this contract.
  • It’s a big problem (trains are not missing). Look, there are all kinds of faults, there are those old VAT trains …
  • A: But without which we cannot cope at the moment, at least for another two years.
  • LB: We have 76 trains in operation on all routes of the metro lines.
  • We want the M6 to enter in a straight line, with the 12 stations from 1 Mai to Tokyo station (not after Băneasa). Here we had an appeal on the procedure, we do a prequalification appeal. The one who was out of the eligible places made an appeal, but in the end the court ruled in our favor and we continued with this process to carry out the structure contract.
  • From Tokyo Station to Otopeni Station, at the Airport, we have (… 0 Japanese funds. This year JICA’s approval was given for the financing of this lot, 320 million euros of the budget, respectively Japanese funds. The difference will be European funds up to about 600 million euros.
  • We also have the support of the Japanese embassy for the bidding of the structural contract for this section.
  • A: Specifically, where and when will we see the first excavations on a new metro line?
  • LB: Most likely we will see the M6 motorway, or we are talking about sector 1 (No. 1 Mai – Tokyo), or we are talking about sector 2 (No. Tokyo – Otopeni Airport). In sector 2 we will have to answer a few [solicitări de] clarifications received from ANAP. It should be finished by 2025. We saw deadlines, 2023, 2024. No, our analysis shows that in the next five years we could talk about a connection between Gara e Nord and Otopeni airport via a metro line.
  • A: But when do you think we will start, not when will we end? It is easier to estimate when we start than when we finish. M5 proved it to us.
  • LB: We have these endless resources and a measure that the Government and the future legislature will have to take is related to the Public Procurement Law and those specialized courts for resources that otherwise we will maintain for years and years.
  • And in M5, beyond the lack of funding, the appeals period between the three contracts – structure, finishes and facilities – went ahead with the structure, the finishes were contested. These contracts must be correlated.
