We are in a period of rampant spread of the virus. Make no mistake, it won’t go away alone

President Klaus Iohannis calls on Romanians to comply with security measures and warns that Romania is in a phase of “unrestrained spread” of the new coronavirus. He also said there is a risk that the number of patients arriving in intensive care will reach “an alarming threshold.”

We are at the beginning of a new week in which, sadly, we see a worrying increase in all relevant indicators of the COVID-19 epidemic in Romania. We are facing an accentuated community transmission in the Capital and in many provinces, a fact that is reflected in the large number of daily infections and in the degree of occupation of beds in intensive care, which runs the risk of reaching an alarming threshold very soon. But the most dramatic thing is that, despite the enormous efforts of doctors, many, too many Romanians lose the fight against this virus every day. Behind all the dry numbers and statistics are grieving families and deep suffering.

We are already in a difficult stage, in a so-called second wave of the epidemic, which is also registered in most European countries, and it is imperative to reverse this negative trend ”, said Iohannis at a press conference.

It does not mean that we should panic, but it is an act of maximum transparency to communicate all aspects that will make even the most reluctant aware of the seriousness of the situation. Only by properly understanding the current image can we, together with the public and the authorities, overcome this unprecedented crisis. However, without a collective effort, it will be impossible to succeed.

That is why I once again ask citizens to be cautious and strictly comply with all current regulations. Beyond the preventive rules adopted by the authorities, there are simple things that each of us can do, as I always say, with a mask in public, whether we are talking about closed spaces or not, ”added the president.

To control this epidemic at the national level, it is mandatory to break the causal chain that facilitates the uncontrolled proliferation of infections. We cannot afford the overcrowding of hospitals and the inability for intensive care units to receive and treat severe cases.

In this regard, we ask the Prime Minister and the Minister of Health to assess in real time the need for intensive care beds and to actually increase the capacity of intensive care units to be prepared for more serious situations, ”he said. Iohannis. .

I know how hard and exhausting these months were when our lives were radically changed.

We can go back to enjoying all the activities we were used to as soon as possible we stop the dangerous increase in the rate of diseases.

The restrictions are only temporary, some activities that we are now giving up can be recovered. But lives, and especially the lives of our loved ones, we cannot get back. At the same time, the health of those who contract COVID-19, once affected, is much more difficult to recover, “he continued.

Permanent challenges to sanitary regulations and restrictive measures maintain a state of mistrust, with significant harmful effects on public health. The experience of the last few months has made it clear that the situation can be kept under control by complying with sanitary regulations and taking strict measures, when necessary, for limited periods of time. We now have much more medical information about the virus, and authorities are constantly adapting and learning from their own mistakes to take the necessary action.

It is much easier to respect sanitary measures now and to be very careful than to regret later that we did not do absolutely everything for each of us to save the lives of our loved ones. We are in a period of rampant spread of the coronavirus. Make no mistake, this stage will not pass by itself. We will be able to get through it well only by strictly following the rules and encouraging everyone around us to do the same. We are a strong nation, it’s time to prove it again! ”, He added.
