Economist Adrian Câciu explained exclusively to DC NEWS what Romanians should expect after the INS announced price increases
INS has announced increases in food prices. Thus, beans became more expensive by 18%, citrus fruits by 16%, fruits by 11%, flour by 7% and pork by 4%.
“We are not talking at this time of crisis, neither of prices nor of food. We are talking about strong signs that production is falling, because investments are not adequate. Support for domestic production has been reduced and, obviously, in this context, all costs additional prices go up.
The population should expect a slightly higher price on the plate for all that agri-food products mean. We hope that after winter, or even during winter, we will intervene with slightly greater stimuli. Because we have very high production costs. On the other hand, we do not have the productions that favor our consumption needs for the winter, so we depend on imports. If the productions of other states are good, the prices are lower. Otherwise they are bigger, “explained Adrian Câciu for DC NEWS.
The investments we need. “It is about the food security of the population”
“Romania must necessarily enter with the stimulus of the agrarian economy, regardless of the limitations that are at the level of the state budget. It is an area where we have potential and it is about the food security of the population.
Investing in irrigation, in protected areas, in greenhouses, would help us. Romania at the time of 1989 was a big exporter of fresh vegetables because it had 10,000 hectares of greenhouses. Now we have less than 150 hectares, that is a big difference. On the other hand, we also need investments in the food industry, which will allow us to stop importing ”, added the economist.
