On Sunday, the Office of the National Registry of Secret State Information (ORNISS) sent clarifications about Laurenţiu Baranga, after information emerged that for 11 years he was an assistant of the Office. Baranga is under house arrest, accused of falsifying his educational documents.

ORNISS presented that between October 1, 2016 and September 30, 2019, Laurenţiu Baranga’s individual employment contract with ORNISS was suspended and, as of October 1, 2019, Baranga’s individual employment contract with ORNISS.

“Practically, in the last 4 calendar years, Mr. Baranga Laurenţiu had no connection with ORNISS. During the period in which Mr. Baranga Laurenţiu worked within ORNISS, he never fulfilled and in no way, the capacity of substitute of the holder of the institution ”, transmitted this Sunday the representatives of ORNISS.

They specified that they will collaborate with criminal investigation bodies to clarify all relevant aspects of Laurenţiu Baranga’s activity.

Laurentiu Baranga, former head of the National Office for Prevention and Fight against Money Laundering (ONPCSB), accused of fraud after allegedly forging diplomas to hold public office, was arrested at his home.

Laurenţiu Baranga was detained for 24 hours on Saturday at the end of the hours-long hearings at his home in Râmnicu Vâlcea.

He resigned on Thursday and the resignation was submitted to the Ministry of Public Finance.

“The person in question is being investigated for inducing and keeping various public institutions in error, by presenting some falsified study documents to the labor file, which were later abolished by the competent courts,” said the representatives of the Romanian Police.

The policemen specify that based on the falsified study documents, the investigated person, respectively Laurenţiu Baranga, held an important position in a public institution, works in higher education institutions and currently holds a high-ranking public position.

The damage claimed so far exceeds 640,000 lei, representing the gross allowances received from some employers, which will be completed based on the totality of the evidence to be administered in the case.

Laurenţiu Baranga was appointed president of the National Office to Prevent and Combat Money Laundering on September 4.
