The new Cook Islands prime minister, who came to power this month, has assigned 17 portfolios to the country’s government. He says he is “delighted with the potential of his cabinet.”
In addition to the position of Prime Minister, Mark Brown is the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Immigration, Finance, Energy and Renewable Energies, Police and Telecommunications. Among other things, he holds managerial positions in sectors such as marine resources, seabed minerals and natural resources, pensions, and remote islands in the country. Brown is also the attorney general of the country.
Opposition leader Tina Browne told Cook Island News that the allotments of all these portfolios are a sign that the prime minister does not trust his cabinet ministers.
“The new prime minister says he is ‘delighted with the potential of his cabinet’ and then offers an astonishing set of 17 portfolios, which is a great sign of his confidence in the potential of his cabinet colleagues,” said Browne. .
It is anticipated that in the coming months, Prime Minister Brown could delegate some of his responsibilities to others.
The Cook Islands are an island country located in the South Pacific, which is politically a parliamentary republic, part of the Kingdom of New Zealand. The Cook Islands have full autonomy in all internal affairs and the defense and foreign affairs sectors are controlled by New Zealand.
All the inhabitants of the Cook Islands are citizens of New Zealand and the state is ruled by a queen.
With borders closed for months, the Cook Islands were not affected by Covid-19 during the pandemic.
Brown said he hopes to provide non-quarantine travel to and from New Zealand by December. This plan has been in place since July, but had to be postponed due to a coronavirus outbreak in Auckland, New Zealand.
