First European Commissioner infected with COVID-19

Mariya Gabriel, representative of Bulgaria, is the first European commissioner confirmed with the new coronavirus. Gabriel has the education and research portfolio in Ursula von der Leyen’s team.

„After a first negative test on Monday, the second COVID-19 test came back positive. I have been in solitary confinement for months and I still stay home, following the rules. Protect your health and stay safe, “Gabriel wrote on Twitter.

Yi Ursula von der Leyen was in solitary confinement after coming into contact with an infected person, but did not become ill. Charles Michel, President of the European Council, and Frans Timmermans, Vice-President of the European Commission, were in the same situation.

The president of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, also went into isolation.
