The Romania of Rădoi, a storm in a glass of water. After the victory with Austria, came the cold shower

The Romanian team, led from the bench by Mirel Rădoi, showed its limits in Iceland.

After the exciting but fortunate victory with Austria, Romania took wings and saw in Mirel Rădoi a savior of the team. I forgot, as if, that on the court we have the same players who were trained, one by one, by Cristoph Daum and Cosmin Contra, without too many results. With a few exceptions from youth!

Ours went to Iceland with hope, with thoughts of victory and even with a slight initial arrogance. That “we are not preparing for penalties, because we want to give the players the feeling that they can win in regulation time” did not inspire us. Proof is the fact that shortly afterwards our people also practiced punishment. Different interviews were conducted with the players, in which they commented on what profession they could have had if they were not footballers, what they do during plane flights. The videos were made with Ronaldinho’s schemes during training by players who fail to hit the mark when they play for the national team. The impression of a different Romania was created. Then, however, they went out into the field!

Chronicle of the first half

With the lead in their boots, as if they had just woken up, our team managed to send the first shot at goal. Then, however, the Icelanders came out and scored through Sigurdson, in the 15th minute. It should be noted that Sigurdson is Iceland’s highest rated player, playing for Everton in the Premier League. By comparison, the highest-rated Romanian player on the field was Nicusor Stanciu, who plays for the Czech Republic. And our only players playing in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland are Ianis Hagi (Glasgow Rangers, did not start) and George Puşcaş (Reading, the second league in England, did not start).

Sigurdson also gave us two more blows. A goal was disallowed in the middle of the first half by the VAR, for an offside to the millimeter. The other, however, was valid. And the phase, with a pass from the first, jumped over our defense that missed offside, finding Sigurdson in good position for a shot with effect close to Tătăruşanu. With 2-0 he entered the break, but not only with that. But with the impression that ours have returned to the time of Daum. Zero attitude, zero dedication!

Chronicle of the second half

At halftime, Mirel Rădoi made three lightning changes. Ianis Hagi, George Puşcaş and Gabi Iancu replaced Ciprian Deac, Denis Alibec and Alexandru Mitriţă. The game, however, did not change, and those who missed a great opportunity were also the Icelanders, through Traustason.

Fortunately, however, the VAR chamber referees intervened and told Central Damir Skomina that a controversial phase had taken place in Iceland. Burcă was hit to the head with an elbow on a free kick for us! The decision could not be other than a shot from 11 meters. Alexandru Maxim transformed and rekindled the hopes of the Romanian supporters. Sadly, the goal failed to wake up those on the field, who quickly reverted to the confusing style of play in the first half. Until the end, we were dangerous through Gabi Iancu, who asked for another penalty for an alleged hand in the area. Penalty not given!

Romania lost 2-1 the match that could bring it one step closer to EURO 2021. A European championship that will be played, among other locations, in Bucharest. Only ours will watch the games from the stands or from home!

In the end, after another painful defeat, two things remain on my mind. The first is the message that a fan gave Denis Alibec, before the game. “Both Barcelona and the great teams are losing. The important thing is to lose well, put your head up on the pitch!” They didn’t!

The second is a sequence from a film with Jean Constantin, “The man we need.” We didn’t have the man we needed! Maybe next time!
