The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a federal agency of the United States Department of Public Health, has identified new symptoms of coronavirus infection similar to symptoms of a rare inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), writes CNN.

MIS-A, the multisystem inflammatory syndrome among adults, has killed at least three patients and disproportionately affects ethnic minorities, according to the CDC team.

The CDC described the cases of 27 adults between the ages of 21 and 50. Most had extreme inflammation throughout the body and organs such as the heart, liver and kidneys, but not the lungs, were affected. “Although hyperinflammation and extrapulmonary organ dysfunction are symptoms among adults hospitalized with severe forms of COVID-19, these conditions are generally accompanied by respiratory failure,” according to the CDC’s weekly report.

“In contrast, the MIS-A patients had minimal respiratory symptoms, hypoxemia (low oxygen in the blood), or abnormalities seen on x-rays. Only 8 of 16 patients had documented respiratory symptoms prior to the initiation of MIS-A.”

A third of the 27 patients tested negative for coronavirus infection but tested positive for antibodies, indicating that they had experienced a SARS-CoV-2 infection. “All but one of the MIS-A patients described in this report were from ethnic or racial minority groups,” the researchers wrote.
