Slovakia and the Czech Republic will each declare a state of emergency this week to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, the prime ministers of the two countries announced separately, which have seen a sharp increase in pollution.
“The situation is extremely serious and I believe that we must take very radical and very bold measures,” the head of the Slovak government, Igor Matovic, said on Monday at the end of a meeting of his country’s crisis cell.
The measure would be adopted by the government on Wednesday and would be the second of its kind since the start of the pandemic.
For his part, Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis announced on Wednesday a special meeting of his government to also approve the state of emergency.
According to the restrictions that the Slovak government has taken into account, all sports, cultural and religious services will be prohibited from 1 October.
Marriages and burials will only be allowed if all participants test negative for the coronavirus.
Record number of diseases in Slovakia
Restaurants, bars and cafes will close at 10 pm, and people who do not live together and want to get closer than 2 meters outside must wear a mask.
Wearing a mask is already mandatory in Slovakia in public places, indoors.
This country of 5.4 million inhabitants has registered 9,343 coronavirus infections since the start of the pandemic and 44 patients have died.
On Friday, the number of daily contaminations reached a record 552.
The Czech Republic, a country of 10.7 million inhabitants, registered a total of 65,313 confirmed cases of contamination, of which 615 died.
