Coronavirus balance, HUGE positivity rate. Dr. Adrian Marinescu, red flag at ATI: It never happened!

Dr. Adrian Marinescu, infectious diseases specialist at the Matei Balş Institute in the Capital, explained exclusively for DC NEWS, what is the difference between the positive rate during the weekend and that of the week, but also how it should be interpreted the situation in ATI.

“On weekends, we generally have targeted tests. We are now on an upward trend, and this has been seen for two weeks. Also, the evidence according to the case definition is a bit more, in the places where we have more cases. We expect a higher positive rate, and it is true that it is now even higher than I would have expected.

As for the places in ATI, there is also an undesirable situation here, but one that could be predicted. We know very well that when we have many cases such as new infections, after a while it is seen in ATI. If we have had this trend for 2 weeks, gathering all the cases, it can be seen in percentage and in ATI, let’s say 5 percent. It is not an exponential increase, but it is constant and, as long as we have an upward slope, it will also be seen in ATI ”, explained the specialist.

Currently, 557 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in ATI.

ATI problems in the red zones

What seems more important to me is that if we do a calculation, we will see that the ATI sections are approximately half occupied. The big problem is that they are not evenly distributed. In red areas, such as the Capital, we will often find ourselves with the situation in which the hospitalization capacity will be reached, so it is necessary for these patients to be transferred. In the near future it will be necessary to take this into account, because they are patients in critical condition and transferring them is not necessarily a solution. It would be nice to find a solution for ATI mobile units “, said Dr. Adrian Marinescu exclusively for DC NEWS.

Positivity rate, different on weekends

Asked if the large number of cases reported on Monday (1,271 to 6,000 tests) could mean that during the week we could have three times as many cases, Dr. Marinescu said there is no cause for concern.

“This has never happened. Because during the week, in addition to the directed tests, even according to the case definition, they are semi-directed. On weekends, those with high suspicion are mandatory, so the rate of positives is high. . Otherwise we also have tests on demand. They will continue even if the holidays are over. There are other examples. We will never be able to extrapolate and compare the weekend with the week! ” the doctor said.
