The liberal Cătălin Dumitru Toma will be the new president of the Vrancea Provincial Council, a position held for 20 years by the Social Democrat Marian Oprișan, considered one of the oldest “barons” of the PSD. It is, without a doubt, one of the biggest surprises of the 2020 local elections.

In the 2020 local elections, voters were able to vote directly on the president of the County Council. 4 years ago, he was elected from the county councilors, voted on the lists, even by them.

Journalist Cristian Tudor Popescu told Digi24 that the removal of Marian Oprișan from power in Vrancea is a stronger sign than the defeat of Gabriela Firea. “Think a bit about what it means: Gabriela Firea has been in PSD for six years. Oprișan is fiber! Oprișan means PSD. Oprișan meant one of the immortals of PSD”, commented the journalist.

Cătălin Dumitru Toma He has been a liberal senator since 2016, after having been mayor of the Jariștea commune for eight years (2008-2016). In the Senate, he is secretary of the European Affairs Commission and member of the Public Administration and Spatial Planning Commission.

At age 42, he pursued a humanistic career in his professional career. He graduated in 1999 from the Faculty of Sociology, Psychology and Pedagogy of the University of Bucharest, then he was a professor for two years and deputy director of the “Duiliu Zamfirescu” Theoretical Higher School in Odobești, Vrancea, a secondary school where he had been a student.

In 2005 he took postgraduate courses in France (Maitrise de francais langue etrangere, “Blaise Pascal” University), and in 2009 he graduated in philology at the Faculty of Romanian Language and Literature – French specialization – at the “Spiru Haret” University of Bucharest . He also holds a senior official certificate, which he obtained in 2012.

He has been working at the PNL Vrancea branch for at least ten years. Between 2010 and 2014 she was in the youth organization, and since 2014 she is a member of the Local Executive Council of PNL Vrancea. In 2016, she assumed leadership of the county NLP organization.
