Since 1968, Romania has had a maximum of six players present in the main singles table of the Roland Garros Grand Slam, in 2011, 2012, 2017 and 2018. This year, after the qualification of Monica Niculescu and Irina Bara, we will have seven representatives. The two athletes joins Simona Halep, Patricia Țig, Irina Begu, Sorana Cîrstea and Ana Bogdan.
Simona Halep, the main favorite of the women’s team, will play in the opening round against Sara Sorribes Tormo, a Spanish athlete ranked 70 in the WTA. The duel in Paris will record the first direct confrontation between the two players.
Romania has seven representatives on the main board of Roland Garros
Irina Begu will face Jil Teichman (54 WTA) in the first round of the French Open, Ana Bogdan will duel with Timea Babos (107 WTA), Patricia Țig will play against Stefanie Voegele (116 WTA), while Sorana Cîrstea will play for a place in the second round with Elena Rybakina (18 WTA).
Monica Niculescu will face Danielle Collins (57 WTA), and Irina Bara will have a difficult mission against Donna Vekic (30 WTA).
Simona Halep and Irina Begu will debut on Parisian clay on Sunday, and the other five players from Romania will play the first match at Roland Gaross on Tuesday. If Begu passes Teichmann and Halep wins the duel with Sorribes Tormo, the two Romanians will be opponents in the second round.
