An Antonov AN-26 military plane crashed on the night of Friday, September 25, in the Kharkov region of eastern Ukraine.

UPDATE 15.25 Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenski announced that one of the two young men who arrived at the hospital after jumping from the plane died. The number of victims of the plane crash reached 26.

Initial novelty:

There were 20 second-year cadets at the “Ivan Kozhedub” Air Force Academy in Kharkov and 7 officers on the plane. The flight was a training ground for cadets and the plane was preparing to land at Chuguev airport.

There should be 28 passengers on board the aircraft, according to the initial report. It later turned out that one of the cadets was not allowed on board, for unclear reasons, according to the Hromadske portal.

The plane crashed during the landing procedure. 25 people on board lost their lives. Two of the cadets survived because they jumped out of the plane shortly before impact. One of them is in critical condition at the hospital.

It is not clear at this time what caused the collapse. One of the pilots reported a few minutes before the tragedy that his left engine had stopped. Experts at the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense say this should not have been a problem, as the temporary shutdown of one of the engines is part of the standard training future pilots are witnessing.
