The stabbing in Paris, which injured two, is “clearly an act of Islamist terrorism,” Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said. The incident took place near the former headquarters of the “Charlie Hebdo” publication. The authorities announced that the investigation had been undertaken by the antiterrorist prosecutor’s office and that seven people had been arrested. After the 2015 attack, the editorial staff of the satirical magazine were transferred to a secret address.
“It is the street where Charlie Hebdo was, it is the way the Islamist terrorists operate, obviously there is little doubt, it is a new bloody attack on our country,” added the minister.
Darmanin also said he had asked the police to consider whether the threat of terrorist acts on the street had been underestimated.
France Presse recently reported that five more people were detained on remand in the investigation, citing judicial sources. The suspects, all men, were arrested during a raid in the Paris suburb of Pantin. There are currently seven suspects in police custody in connection with the attack.
The five men placed in pretrial detention join the main suspect and another, detained immediately after the attack. A police source said one of the suspects was Pakistani and the other Algerian.
Two journalists, employees of Premieres Lignes, who were on a smoke break, were injured in Friday’s attack.
