A terrifying episode took place in Italy, where the Italian referee Daniele De Santis, 33, lost his life after being attacked in his own apartment, being stabbed. His girlfriend, Eleonora Manta (30 years old), who was with her partner, suffered the same tragic fate.
The double homicide was committed in the city of Lecce, as reported by journalists from the Peninsula from corrieredellosport. The attack took place on Monday and Daniele De Santis was found on the stairs of the block, while trying to call for help. Instead, his girlfriend found herself out of breath inside the apartment.
Italian authorities have opened an investigation and, according to initial reports, neighbors have heard screams. Witnesses noticed an unknown man who left the building in a hurry. The possible killer was carrying a knife and a backpack. It could also be a murder out of jealousy, according to investigators.
The representatives of the arbitration school in Italy did not hide their dismay when they learned of the tragic way in which Daniele ended up, but also his girlfriend, Eleonora. “I am in shock. We still know very little about the case. What I can say is that we are in close contact with the family and all the people of the association,” said Marcello Nicchi, director of the Italian Association of Referees.
Daniele De Santis made his refereeing debut in 2017, at the Serie B level, when he was the fourth official in the confrontation between Pisa and Benevento. In the last three years he has refereed about 130 games in Serie C and Serie D. Today, September 23, Daniele De Santis should have officiated the match between Monopoli and Modena, scheduled for the Italian Cup.
