A suspect was arrested after sending an envelope containing a poison, ricin, to US President Donald Trump, authorities announced Sunday, AFP said.

“I confirm that an arrest was made at the Peace Bridge in Buffalo, New York,” Aaron Bowker, a customs official, told AFP, referring to the bridge that connects Canada with New York state. “The investigation is ongoing,” he added, writes Agerpres.

The suspect is a woman who was carrying a firearm at the time of her arrest, according to various US media.

A government official told France Presse, on condition of anonymity, that the woman was scheduled to be sent to a judge on Monday.

The US press announced on Saturday that authorities intercepted an envelope containing castor oil and was addressed to President Donald Trump. The letter had been discovered earlier in the week and had not reached the White House, according to the New York Times and CNN.

The newspaper added that the letter was sent from Canada.

Correspondence addressed to the White House is first inspected and then sorted in warehouses near Washington.

According to CNN, the contents of the envelope were tested several times in one of these warehouses, confirming the presence of ricin.

Castor oil is the most toxic substance in the plant kingdom, 6,000 times stronger than cyanide. It is a lethal substance if swallowed, inhaled or injected and against which there is no antidote.
