The ship’s commander Bogdan Rusu, who managed to save the crew of a sailboat caught by Hurricane Sally in the Gulf of Mexico, told Digi24 about the adventure he went through a few days ago. He said that he would repeat the act at any time, because it is in the sailors’ code to save lives in danger, and confessed that he has more emotions on television than in the middle of the storm.

Commander Bogdan Rusu, 38, said he received the SOS call around 8:00 am and that he left for the area indicated by the signal.

“It just came to our notice then. The storm was getting worse. Hurricane Sally is a class 2 storm. The wind was blowing over 40 knots and there were 4-meter waves. Visibility from 2 miles dropped to almost 1 mile. With great difficulty we managed to locate the ship, to proceed to save it “, said Bogdan Rudsu. Digi24.

The rescue operation was at its limit, because the boat in distress, a small sailboat, was taking in water and the storm was growing stronger. Also, the people on board were exhausted.

„(The sailboat – no) I had very little chance, especially considering that the boat was taking in water. The two-day crew was without food, very dehydrated … One person on board the ship was 70 years old and overweight, ”the captain described the condition of the people he rescued.

He received congratulations from all his colleagues, employer, authorities, but he does not consider that he did something out of the ordinary.

“I do not think I have done anything extraordinary, I did something that anyone should do. It is the sailor’s duty to save his fellow men in danger.”

Bogdan Rusu does not blame the rescued crew for being in danger, because climate change makes the weather very unpredictable.

“It just came to our attention then. Hurricane Sally turned into a tropical depression and became a class 2 hurricane in a very short time. He too caught us off guard,” the commander explained.

Bogdan Rusu also said that he would do the same at any time and confessed that he has more emotions on television than during the hurricane.

“I am happy to be able to do this with the help of my team. It is something that we have to do and we had no emotions, now I have more,” Commander Bogdan Rusu said.
