Romanian ship commander Bogdan Rusu will be nominated for the “Bravery at Sea” award after saving the lives of four endangered sailors aboard a sailboat on September 13, during a tropical storm in the Gulf of Mexico. The Romanian commander received an impressive message from the United States Coast Guard.
The rescue operation was carried out about 110 miles west of Clearwater, on the coast of the United States of America, in the Gulf of Mexico, on Sunday, September 13, around 11 a.m. (GMT local time), during Tropical Storm Sally.
The lives of four sailors, who made up the crew of the Yes Dear sailboat, were in great danger after the sinking of their ship, and the United States Coast Guard abandoned the rescue operation, carried out by an HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter, due to the bad weather. Precisely on the basis of these evaluations and considerations, I decided that both I, from the position of ambassador of the IMO, and perhaps the Government of Romania, through the Ministry of Transport, we formulate the proposal to the International Maritime Organization, for the annual award ‘Bravery at Sea’, to the commander of the ship Bogdan Rusu, who risked to face the sea, to save his confreres ”, concluded Ovidiu Cupşa.
In accordance with regulations, nominations for the “Bravery at Sea” award are made annually to the IMO General Secretariat until April of the following year.
