Simona Halep defeated Jasmine Paolini in the second round in Rome, 6-3, 6-4, obtaining qualification in the knockout stages of the Italian tournament.

Her next rival will be chosen between the Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska and the American Amanda Anisimova.

In a readjustment match, Simona did not have a great day, as expected after a new competitive break of a month. The game did not have much pace, especially at work, given the multitude of successful breaks on both sides, 12 in total (7 Simona). But the good news is that even though she struggled to find her game, Simona was not in danger and did not have to recover from difficult scoring situations, earning a useful victory.

Simona

A very energetic, determined and courageous player, Paolini quickly showed her intentions, constantly trying to attack and keep Simona away with her basic weapon, the forehand, part of which she often hits spectacular shots with ease. Remarkable. Paolini separated at 2-0 and had the ball for 3-0 and to confirm the break, but Simona kept her pressed in the return, besieging her second serve, and returned the score, both in games and in and in the plate. Paolini can be brilliant in places, but he has a hard time maintaining a high level for a longer period of time, which is even more difficult to achieve against a player who leaves as little room for maneuver as Simona.

Although at 3-2 she left the service too easily with some errors, Simona recovered and got two more breaks quite comfortably, dominating when she needed the changes on the baseline, especially when she directed them to her lapel. Jasmine, the least important part of this game.

The second set was a bit more fragmented and slower than the first. Paolini continued to have problems at work, losing it four times, as in the first set. Simona also entered somewhat in this break dance, not finding her rhythm and not closing some points as she would have liked, perhaps too relaxed knowing that she always has the option to attack the opponent’s serve, especially the second. , who won 15 points out of 17. But, from 3-4, the Romanian, obviously with more weapons and more options available, found enough clarity in the game to put distance between her and Paolini. An eight-point series in a row quickly put Simona back in the lead, and then forced and achieved the decisive break for victory: 6-3, 6-4 in one hour and 24 minutes.

Simona finished the match with 14 winners and 15 unforced errors (11 – 28 for her opponent).

Without being brilliant, it is a solid and welcome victory at this stage of the tournament: Simona knows that she will need more and will surely bring more in the next round, when another match awaits her in which she will receive a little rhythm, from the part of a great classic hitter, either Yastremska or Anisimova. If it’s the latter, it will be Simona and Amanda’s first meeting in the quarterfinals at Roland Garros last year, and a first chance for a rematch.

Paolini’s victory is Simona’s 10th consecutive victory on the circuit, her latest loss dating back to the Australian Open semi-finals. Since then, she has won tournaments in Dubai and Prague.

In doubles, Raluca Olaru and Anna-Lena Friedsam confirmed yesterday’s good victory with Mattek-Sands / Kenin and qualified for the quarterfinals, after a 6-4, 6-3 victory with Kato / Santamaria. Raluca’s good time on scum continues, reaching the final in Prague, with Monica Niculescu.

Simona Halep also continues in the doubles table, along with Monica Niculescu, they will play tomorrow with Aoyama / Shibahara, for a place in the quarterfinals.

Horia Tecău and Jean Julien Rojer lost their first match after the US Open, defeated by Koolhof / Metkic, 6-4, 6-4.
