Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said he had asked Russian President Vladimir Putin to supply his country with various types of weapons, Agerpres writes.
In a discussion with Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoig in Minsk on Wednesday, Lukashenko said: “I have asked the Russian president for more new weapons.”
He did not specify what types of weapons he requested from his Russian counterpart.
“We can keep the situation under control not only in Belarus, but also along our borders,” Lukashenko added, according to Belta.
Russia and Belarus are currently conducting joint military exercises that will last until the end of September. Lukashenko also said that the two countries should have more such military exercises.
Lukashenko, who faces massive protests internally after the presidential elections that protesters claim were rigged, also said that the new presidential elections will take place after the country adopts a new constitution.
His comments come after a meeting between Vladimir Putin and Alexander Lukashenko in the Black Sea town of Sochi on Monday. On this occasion, the Minsk leader obtained a loan of 1.5 billion dollars for his country.
Belarus’ Defense Ministry said Tuesday that it does not rule out a strong response to the military threats.
The ministry warned that any threats would be addressed within the Collective Security Treaty Organization, a post-Soviet structure that includes Russia. According to the cited source, several countries are trying to deteriorate relations between Belarus and Russia.
