The Romanian Air Force has published, for the first time, images with the new Patriot surface-to-air missile system that will officially enter the Romanian Army tomorrow, during a reception ceremony that will take place at the National Air Defense Training Center. from Capu Midia, county of Constanța.
This first Patriot missile system (out of a total of seven) will be equipped by the Romanian Air Force and will be operational in 2021, upon completion of the training program.
This will be the first of four systems to enter the Romanian Air Force endowment, in the first phase of endowment. In the second stage, three systems are provided for the endowment of Land Forces, which will be delivered in the period 2024-2026 ”, is shown in a press release sent to Digi24.ro
A Patriot missile “system” contains, in addition to radars, command and control systems, four anti-aircraft missile launchers or anti-missile interceptors. Each of these launchers contains 4 or 12 canisters containing anti-aircraft missiles, respectively ballistic interceptors.
According to the Ministry of National Defense, the acquisition of PATRIOT systems was established by Law no. 222/2017 for the achievement of the “Air defense capacity on the ground”, related to the essential endowment program “Surface-to-air missile system (HSAM)”.
The document provided for the award of contracts to the Government of the United States for the purchase of seven surface-to-air missile systems of PATRIOT 3+ configuration, respectively main equipment, means of transport, materials, spare parts, maintenance equipment, ammunition, package of initial logistical support and training service, cryptographic and special equipment.
Romania received the newest Patriot configuration, currently used by the US military.The cost of acquiring the first Patriot system amounts to US $ 910.1 million, VAT included. The total value of the contract is 3.9 billion euros.
