The Turkish exploration ship from which the territorial dispute between Turkey and Greece broke out in the Mediterranean Sea ended its mission and returned to port.
The Athens government sees Ankara’s first credible step in the direction of facilitating the bilateral relationship.
“The military de-escalation will only take place with the immediate withdrawal of all Turkish ships from the Greek mainland,” the Athens diplomat said after the NATO secretary general announced that he had asked the two sides to engage in dialogue.
The research ship had been dispatched for hydrocarbon exploration off a Greek island on August 10, accompanied by a military fleet. Aggressive exchanges of statements between the Greek and Turkish governments followed, with the participation of the European Union, especially France, on the Greek side.
Instead, Turkey is sending another drillship to the Black Sea, where it discovered last month, according to Ankara, the largest natural gas field in the area. The risks of these resources are enormous for Turkey, which needs almost all of its energy needs from imports.
