France has registered 10,561 new cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, surpassing the threshold of 10,000 cases for the first time, according to data published on Saturday by health authorities, Reuters reports.

The data, which surpasses the previous record of 9,843 new cases reported on Thursday, highlights the return of the disease in France.

The surge in the number of coronavirus cases prompted the government to announce new measures on Friday to prevent a return to quarantine measures previously imposed at the national level.

Prime Minister Jean Castex has promised measures to speed up testing and toughen measures taken locally in high incidence areas.

The Health Ministry also announced a series of 772 outbreaks under investigation, an increase of 86 in the last 24 hours.

In the last week, there have been 2,432 hospitalizations for Covid-19, of which 417 in intensive care.

The number of deaths in France since the outbreak of the Covid-19 epidemic this year in hospitals and nursing homes has reached 30,910, of which 17 in the last 24 hours.
