The heroes of the anti-communist resistance in the mountains. How a family of partisans of the Arnăuţoiu group was annihilated

Up in Făgăraş, Nucşoara was the headquarters of the anti-communist partisans, for almost a decade, until 1958. The long resistance in the mountains was coordinated by brothers Petre and Toma Arnăuţoiu, which ended violently with the execution in the summer of 59. . The entire period was punctuated with dramatic episodes, one of which took place in July 1951, in the Vâlsan valley.

Initially, the resistance in Nucşoara was made up of 16 partisans, supported by hundreds of peasants, including many women; the best known were Elena Arnăuţoiu, sister of Petre and Toma, and Elisabeta Rizea. History professor Cătălin Nedelcu taught a course on anti-communist resistance for eight years and spoke, over time, with important members of the resistance movement in Nucşoara.

“On July 10, 1951, a dramatic episode of the struggle between the Nucşoara partisans and the Securitate took place in Valea Vâlsanului. The incident was told in prison to Cornel Drăgoi, another partisan, even by Titu Jubleanu, one of the protagonists of the dramatic conflict, “says Nedelcu. That summer day, several members of the resistance group came face to face with the Securitate. Titu Jubleanu, his wife, Maria, one of their two children, Tică, and Ionel Marinescu, called” The Doctor “, were surprised by the authorities without being prepared.

In the volume “The Anti-Communist Armed Resistance on the Southern Slopes of the Făgăraş Mountains”, Grigore Constantinescu presents Cornel Drăgoi’s statements about those moments: “Jublenii and Marinescu were somewhere in Vâlsan. Aunt Marioara, wife of Titu

Jubleanu had washed his clothes and spread them out in the sun. And a surveillance plane flew over. But what did they say: it’s the Sibiu races. But he was from the Securitate and he announced to those below: “Look, in this square, some white dots!” They met them. When Marioara Securitatea’s father saw her, his last words were: “Shoot, Titule, let the boys escape!” Uncle Titu and his uncle Marioara fired and the children escaped: Tica, her son and Ionel Marinescu. “

THEY JUMPED ON THEIR FEET UNTIL THE LUNGS CAME OUT. “

Titu Jubleanu and his wife were surrounded by security guards and the tragic episode happened: one of them shot Maria, and the others “jumped on her with their feet until their lungs came out through the crack,” he said. Titus to Cornel Draghici. When he saw that his wife had been killed, Titu Jubleanu surrendered. At the time, the sadism of the Securitates was undeniable: they made him dig his wife’s grave. Cornel Drăgoi recalled: “They made him dig a hole in the grave, with his fingernails and fingers. He also dug a broken slab. “Quick, quick, bandit!” He dug a palm wide and said, “Enough!” «I put sand and pebbles on her, with my hands, after kissing her, and that’s all …» And they took him to Pitesti, to the Securitate, where we met and he showed me … He showed me his mouth with broken teeth with nail pliers . His teeth were pulled out with a pair of fingernails. She had a half-broken tooth, a broken tooth in her gums and there were places where the pliers had bitten her and a piece of chewing gum. They did this to him when they caught him, to force him to say where the boys are. “

In the Jubleanu Archive of the CNSAS archive a written note was kept, dated July 14, 1951, in which the authorities specify that María Jubleanu was buried where she was shot: “On July 10 of this year, the search company worked to find the band of brothers. Arnăuţoiu from the Argeş region, met the bandits Marinescu Ioan, Constantin Jubleanu, Titu Jubleanu and Maria Jubleanu, on the Zănoguţa mountain, at the point called Scroafa Mare, sitting together and preparing food. The bandits summoned by our organs fled to the nearby forest. Opening fire, Jubleanu Maria was shot dead and Titu Jubleanu was captured alive. The body of Titu Jubleanu’s wife, Maria Jubleanu, was buried near the place where she was shot. “

THE SUPPORTERS DON’T GIVE UP

Titu Jubleanu, who had fled to the mountains since 1949, was sentenced to 25 years of forced labor for “conspiracy against social order”, accused of helping “bandit refugees in the mountains”. He spent more than eight years in communist prisons, in Pitesti, in Jilava, in the Black Valley, in the Peninsula, in Aiud and Gherla.

In 1959 he was tried again at the Arnăuţoiu brothers’ trial and sentenced to death. He was executed in Jilava on the night of July 18-19, 1959.

“Tica didn’t know what happened to her mother for a while. She thought that both parents were caught and feared what would happen to them. And her attitude from the end, from Râpele cu Brazi, where she fought to the end, I think she has something to do with the fate of his parents. The young hero did not give the full satisfaction of being captured alive to all the partisans who had deceived him for nine years, “says Professor Cătălin Nedelcu.

Constantin, the other son of the Jubleanu family, also met a tragic end. At just 27 years old, he committed suicide on May 20, 1958, after a shootout with the Securitate, the same day that the other members of the partisan group were captured.

As she never denounced her parents and brother, Matilda, daughter of the Jubleans, along with Verona, was repeatedly beaten by militiamen and tortured by hanging her hands.

From the memoirs of Tică Jubleanu

Tică Jubleanu described the story of July 10, 1951 in a diary that he kept until May 1958, when he was assassinated near the town of Corbşori, in the Corbi commune. Subsequently, the Securitate confiscated the newspaper and it is now on file with the CNSAS.

“We ate and went to bed. Dad and Mom got up early this morning and I started painting. When I finished, I put my shoes on and during that time the food was ready. And I ate, and after that I went and took out some things from a hole, that I was going to take a bath. My mother brought water and heated it, and during that time the “Doctor” told me: “Let’s play a game.” We started playing and we played some games and the “Doctor” He got angry and spoke out loud. And our mother kept telling us that the water had warmed up. At one point, we heard: “Here’s one with a rifle!” Oh, the Militia !!! ». The” doctor “, upon hearing these words, he did not wait any longer and tore it barefoot and unarmed. I grabbed the submachine gun and my mother, following me, stepped on it until I picked it up from the ground and it slipped out of my hand. When I started, I did not come back with him and I let him go after the “Doctor.” My father grabbed the Mauser with four shots that was inside, and when I left, the guy fired, but he didn’t hit me, because he didn’t shoot or he hold my hand. And when we separated a few meters, we heard him shout to the others: “Come on, boy! They ran away.” My father said to run faster, because they saw that we had our weapons left and they were coming after us. We just pulled away a little and they kept yelling, “Wait!” and shooting. After running a mile and a half, I heard them creak on the trail, and at one point there was a quick shoreline. The “doctor” was before, my father after him, and I took my mother by the hand and helped her down. When we were under the coast, I heard one say, “Come on, look at them.” Mom, with tears in her eyes, told us: “Run, Mom, at least you will escape.” Then I broke it on the run and hit a spring with some rocks and some logs, because I thought it would not finish. And behind them came shots and shouts: “Wait, raise your hand.” When I saw myself in the ravine and passed, I told myself that I had escaped and taken a step back, that there was nothing I could do. “
