Real Madrid broke after the transfer of James Rodríguez to Everton, any link with agent Jorge Mendes, the most influential coach in the world of football.
Real Madrid broke with James Rodríguez, the Colombian signing a contract with the British group Everton. He was the last player to remain contractually linked to Real Madrid and who was under the sphere of influence of the Portuguese agent Jorge Mendes.
Real Madrid and Jorge Mendes, break up after 13 years! The Portuguese no longer has any “representative” in the Capital
For the first time in 13 years, Real Madrid will no longer have a player or coach hired by Jorge Mendes, the most influential agent in the world of football, on the squad or on the technical bench.
Relations between Real Madrid and Mendes began in 2007, when Portuguese center-back Pepe arrived at Real Madrid after Cristian Chivu refused to move to the Bernabéu. Since then, Jorge Mendes’ influence has grown within the most important club of the last century.
Naturally, the most important move was the transfer of Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United to Real Madrid, a move worth 90 million euros, already signed by former president Ramón Calderón.
Important transfers followed, such as Ángel di María, Ricardo Carvalho, Fabinho, Fabio Coentrao or James Rodríguez, plus the arrival of coach José Mourinho. In all these 13 years, Real Madrid has invested approximately 500 million euros in everything that the “entourage” of the influential agent involved. The biggest move, Cristiano Ronaldo, brought most of the money to Mendes, but also a huge increase in global influence.
Real Madrid received 186 million euros for the sale of players hired by Mendes, but Florentino Pérez was never a supporter of the Portuguese. In Madrid, it is said that the break between Zidane and James Rodríguez started precisely from the idea that the Colombian star was the last “remnant” of the agent within the white club. Eventually, James Rodríguez was traded to Bayern Munich and then permanently sold to Everton in the Premier League.
Florentino Pérez is not in favor of bringing the club closer to very influential agents, knowing how they handle delicate situations.
Investigated by the Portuguese tax authorities
The Portuguese Public Ministry announced in March that registrations had been made at major football clubs, including Benfica, FC Porto, Sporting and Braga, as well as at Jorge Mendes’ company.
The “offside operation” would have as its objective alleged professional football operations carried out since 2015 and that would have involved acts to avoid payments to the tax authorities.
Florentino Pérez saw Mendes as the main culprit for Cristiano Ronaldo’s intention to leave Real Madrid. Likewise, the leadership of the ‘whites’ had real difficulties regarding the new contracts that the footballers hired by Mendes had to sign.
