This Thursday there was a strong fire in the port of Beirut, a month after the explosion that devastated the Lebanese capital. The fire raised a great column of black smoke over the Beirut sky.
The fire occurred in the port’s free zone.
In a statement posted on Twitter, the Lebanese army said the fire broke out at an oil and tire depot. Efforts are being made to put out the flames, and army helicopters will participate in these efforts, the statement also shows.
The Lebanese Red Cross has announced that there is no risk of explosion and that there are no injuries, although there are some people who have difficulty breathing.
More than 190 people were killed in last month’s explosion and a residential neighborhood near the port was razed. The huge explosion was caused by a large quantity of ammonium nitrate, stored in unsuitable conditions in the port.
