Police filmed the attack in Otopeni, where two ATMs blew up. For now, investigators say they have multiple leads and even a ring of suspects.
According to authorities, the thieves wearing medical masks and green capes used a hand-held explosive device. There have been five similar attacks since the beginning of the year.
The attack lasted less than five minutes. The two blown up ATMs were installed on the ground floor of a block of flats in Otopeni. The thieves, at least three in total, quickly disappeared with a car that had been stolen from the Capital and then abandoned and set on fire. The case was taken up by the criminal investigation department of the IGPR.
The investigators gathered all the information collected at the scene and observed the images captured by the surveillance cameras that captured, it is true, not very clearly, the two explosions, which resounded 10 seconds apart. The device used by thieves is accessible with a minimum of technical knowledge.
Chief Commissioner Cristian Gheorghe, Directorate of Criminal Investigation: “It’s a handcrafted device, it was pretty well made. It’s a mode of operation used outside. It’s called a pizza slide. The device, if you ask me, was well made.”
An extremely important issue in solving this case remains the nature of the explosive used by the attackers to blow up the two ATMs. For now, they have sought the help of experts from the Forensic Institute to find out if it was a civil or military explosive. Hypothesis that I exclude for the moment, because in such a situation the explosion would have been much stronger and the damage much more significant.
Thieves emptied only one ATM
So far, several witnesses have been heard. The thieves were also caught on surveillance cameras, but according to investigators, their faces were covered.
Chief Commissioner Cristian Gheorghe, Directorate of Criminal Investigation: “There is a circle of suspects in this case. They had their faces covered, I could not say it one hundred percent, but they had masks of these that the population uses, for medical use.”
With the investigation in place, investigators found that although both ATMs blew up, the thieves only emptied the first, then disappeared without touching the second. The amount of the damage is not yet known, the bank is expected to make its own assessments and then officially say how much money it has lost.
However, it is estimated that the thieves stole tens of thousands of lei.
