Quercithin, a naturally occurring molecule abundant in apples or onions, can kill the coronavirus. The discovery made in Spain

Scientists in Spain have discovered that a natural molecule called quercetin can kill the new coronavirus.

This works as a Sars-CoV-2 inhibitor, acting on one of the key proteins for the multiplication of the pathogen. Thus, the new discoveries made by a group of researchers from Zaragoza and Madrid show that quercithin, by blocking the enzymatic activity of 3CLpro, is “lethal” for Sars-CoV-2.

Computer simulations showed that Quercithin binds exactly to the active ingredient in the protein 3CLpro, preventing it from working properly. says Bruno Rizzuti, who coordinates the research team.

Right now, this molecule is already on par with the best antivirals used to prevent coronavirus infection, but none of them are approved as drugs.“says Bruno Rizzuti, for the Italian publication Il Messagero.

Quercetin it is abundant in common vegetables and fruits, such as capers, red onions, radishes, and apples.

The molecule is known for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-allergic properties.

Quercithin can be easily modified to make an even stronger synthetic molecule, scientists say.

The results of the research are presented in a study initiated by a Spanish foundation in collaboration with the Nanotechnology Institute of the National Research Council, CNR-Nanotec in Cosenza, published in the International Journal of Biological Macromolecules.
