The representatives of the European Police Union (EUROPOL) are in conflict with the Minister of the Interior, Marcel Vela. Trade unionists are outraged by the minister’s intention to abolish thousands of positions in the Romanian police. These are vacancies in all central and local structures. According to the union, through an address of the General Directorate of Human Resources Management of the Ministry of the Interior, the Romanian Police and the Romanian Border Police, but also the other operational structures, are requested to communicate the number of vacancies due to leave, reports Mediafax.
The document was drafted on Wednesday and the deadline for submission of reports is 11am on Friday.
The reaction of the Europol trade unionists came shortly after the publication of the MIA document. They claim that the approach is unacceptable and is a true violation of public order and security because the shortage of police personnel is approaching 20,000 police officers. The biggest problems are found in particularly important structures, such as public order, traffic, criminal investigations, border police, immigration and organized crime, where 2,000 officers are needed.
“They are a mockery of citizens who are induced by the idea of increasing security by installing these structures, when in reality they will take people off the streets to transfer them to the new ‘police’. Whoever believes that he obtains another result with the same human resources is naive. Nothing changes if people are removed from the neighborhood, from public order and transferred to the ‘school police’, instead of relieving the police of tasks so that they can spend more time in the field, in the middle of the community, in the schools and other places and settings of similar interest, ”writes Europol.
The Europol union also sounds the alarm about the “excessive politicization” of the Romanian Police and the transformation of this institution into an electoral instrument.
Trade unionists also criticize the fact that all decisions are made in violation of legal provisions on transparency in decision-making and social dialogue because the social partners, the trade unions, have not been consulted in any way.
This is the most relevant example of one that is based on political foundations, to the detriment of those related to citizen security. In this way, we request that any steps of institutional reorganization during the electoral campaign and the establishment of short, medium and long-term priorities be stopped immediately after the parliamentary elections and after we have a government installed ”, said the Europol trade unionists .
