Athens denied on Thursday night that it would start talks with Ankara to alleviate the situation in the eastern Mediterranean, following a message to this effect sent on Twitter by the secretary general of the North Atlantic Alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, writes AFP, taken over by Agerpres .

“The information that has been revealed about the alleged technical talks in NATO does not correspond to reality,” the Greek Foreign Ministry said in a statement Thursday night.

According to the Twitter message of the NATO secretary general, Greece and Turkey, members of the Alliance, “agreed to initiate technical talks in NATO” with the aim of preventing any new incident in the Eastern Mediterranean, where a Turkish seismic research vessel , accompanied by warships, has been in Greek territorial waters since 10 August.

“I observe the intention of the Secretary General of NATO to act to implement military detente mechanisms. However, the military de-escalation will take place only with the immediate withdrawal of all Turkish ships from the Greek mainland, “said the diplomat from Athens.

On August 10, Ankara sent the seismic research ship Oruc Reis, accompanied by military naval forces, to explore the Greek island of Kastellorizo, 2 kilometers off the Turkish coast, in an area rich in hydrocarbons.

At the end of August, the tension between Turkey and Greece increased further, with rival military exercises, Turkey, with the United States, then with Russia, and Greece with France, Cyprus and Italy.
