The Spanish government has allowed the study of an anti-Covid vaccine, which is in phase 2 testing, after having been tested in humans in the United States and Belgium.
Doctors will apply the Ad26.COV2-S treatment to 590 people who will participate voluntarily in the study in Spain, Germany and Belgium.
Tests carried out so far in primary care have shown that it is the best candidate for the Covid-19 vaccine developed by Johnson & Johnson. Ad26.COV2-S has been shown to generate antibodies, which almost completely protect the lungs from exposure to Sars-Cov-2.
The Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS) has approved that tests be carried out on 190 healthy subjects in two hospitals in Madrid and one in the city of Santander. There will be two groups of volunteers in Spain, according to age: 18-55 years and over 65 years.
The Spanish Minister of Health, Salvador Illa, assured that the vaccine meets the necessary safety criteria for its administration to people, and the tests will help determine the doses and the time necessary between them.
Spain announced this week that it will participate in the collective order made by the European Commission for the Astra Zeneca anti-Covid vaccine.
Spanish authorities expect at least 10 million doses of the vaccine developed by scientists at the University of Oxford, and the first doses should be available in early December.
„The main objective is to test if the vaccine is safe for humans, if it is effective and if antibodies are created against the Covid-19 disease. Vaccinations are scheduled to begin in mid-September and a total of 75 subjects will participate in the Clinical Trials Unit of Hospital La Princesa, ”said Dolores Ochoa, principal investigator at Hospital La Princesa in Madrid.
“Animal and human tests show that the vaccine does not cause toxicity or side effects. Phase 1 of this vaccine was carried out in the United States and Belgium in 1,045 people and the results were satisfactory,” said Salvador Illa, the Spanish Minister of Health.
