The country that could be the next epicenter of the pandemic in the world.

One of the largest countries in the world appears to be starting the coronavirus pandemic and appears to be heading toward the “perfect storm” as inequality in the country and the epidemic meet.

Brazil is the most affected country in Latin America, with more than half of the total number of registered cases and deaths in South America.

The state has topped 10,000 new cases three times a day this week, reaching more than 155,000 cases and nearly 10,800 deaths.

The Atlantic writes that although the United States is the main site of the coronavirus epidemic at this time, the next critical point may be in the South American country.

“Brazil is probably the next epicenter of the pandemic in the world,” says Luciano Cesar Azevedo, a doctor from Sao Paulo who has spent his days and nights treating patients in intensive care.

“I think Brazil will have about 100,000 deaths,” the doctor continued, adding that intensive care beds are 90% occupied.

Confirmed cases and the number of deaths are growing rapidly, setting new records every day. Furthermore, the country is led by one of the leaders who denies the danger posed by the coronavirus, Jair Bolsonaro. It calls for relaxing social measures and reopening the economy, which could accelerate the spread of the virus.

“We are just at the beginning,” added Azevedo.

Added to this is the fact that Brazil is the country with the highest inequalities of all the countries in the world, with the exception of some African states, according to NPR, so it is expected that the poor will be even more affected.

For example, 13 million poor Brazilians live in favas, largely dependent on the public health system, shaken by coronavirus cases. In addition, many poor residents suffer from chronic diseases such as diabetes, tuberculosis, or high blood pressure, so they are at high risk of complications from coronavirus infection.
