Professor Alexandru Rafila, president of the Romanian Society for Microbiology, told Digi24 that tests for coronavirus in the population will likely be carried out in the second half of June and July, and “tens of thousands of samples” will be collected. to see the evolution of the disease.
“This is a seroprevalence, seroepidemiological study to be carried out at the national level. The methodology adopted is that of the WHO and there will be consultations this week so that the plan developed by colleagues from the INSP can be discussed with WHO experts and possibly corrected if there is something that can be improved.
During June, the sera from those who will participate in this study will probably be collected and in the second part of June, July, the tests will be carried out. There will probably be tens of thousands of tests nationwide, “said Alexandru Rafila.
He explained that it is important to use the best test kits available.
“The important thing is to make sure that it is a study that has value for public health and scientific value, the best tests available at that time will be used, because they are tests that are still under approval in the European Agency, in order to give us the answers to the questions we have: what percentage of the population has gone through the disease, to know this situation at the regional level, locally and to be able to appreciate the possible evolution of the disease, depending on the locality, and we can also do a comparative study, for example, with what will be recorded next year, “said Rafila.
According to the professor of microbiology, it is recommended that tests be performed when the number of coronavirus cases decreases.
“These studies are generally not done once. They are done periodically so that you can see the evolutionary trend of population immunization and it is very important to have good quality evidence that does not give false positive or false negative results and give you very clear directions related to this phenomenon.
