The government’s plan to travel to the islands of mainland Greece is in three stages and will be completed on June 1, the Greek Interior Ministry announced.

Travel from the mainland to the islands has been banned as a precaution against the spread of the coronavirus in places where medical units are insufficient.

However, as the government relaxes the restrictive measures, trips to the islands will begin gradually, as the spread of COVID-19 has decreased significantly, writes the Greek reporter.

The first phase of the trip to the islands by sea or air will be for people who have tourism on the islands or for teachers.

The second stage will be Monday, May 18, when tourism workers and other employees will be able to travel to the islands, provided they have certificates from their employer.

If all goes well by then, unrestricted travel will be allowed starting May 25, and access to the islands will be free for Greek and foreign travelers starting June 1.

The Interior Ministry emphasizes that there will be strict measures regarding the means of transport, such as a maximum number of passengers, seats, etc.

Before boarding a ship or plane, passengers will check their temperature, while each one must complete a health questionnaire.

The boats will be able to transport only 50% of the passenger capacity, in the planes there will be an empty seat next to each passenger

Regarding travel to mainland Greece, the Deputy Minister for Civil Protection, Nikos Hardalias, announced that he will be allowed to travel outside the place of residence from Monday, May 18, without restrictions.

On Friday, Lufthansa announced that commercial flights to Athens from Frankfurt airport will begin on May 18.
