Park Won-soon, the mayor of Seoul, made a brief press statement on Saturday in which he announced that all clubs and bars should close immediately, according to CNN.
This decision came after the number of infections increased in Itaewon, a neighborhood in the city known for clubs and nightlife.
On Thursday, a 29-year-old man tested positive for the new coronavirus. The person had visited several clubs in Itaewon on the night of May 1 to 2, according to the Korean Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Since then, 40 people who have been in contact with the man have been infected. Of these, 27 are from Seoul.
South Korea has yet to introduce a national containment measure, but has used certain procedures to control the epidemic. In clubs, for example, people must give their full name and phone number before entering the venue.
However, authorities say there have been various sources of infection in Seoul clubs.
“I have made many efforts and sacrifices. We will let everything be lost due to the indifference of some people,” said the mayor of the Korean capital.
South Korea has recorded 10,000 coronavirus cases and 256 deaths. Most of the infected were cured.
