Nine members of the same Chinese family died after eating homemade noodles, which were reportedly kept in the freezer for a year, The Independent reports.

The family was poisoned with a toxic substance called Bongkrek acid, a toxic respiratory toxin found in pasta, local authorities told the Global Times. Police rule out the possibility of intentional poisoning.

China’s National Health Commission issued an urgent warning on Tuesday to prevent people from preparing and consuming fermented flour and rice foods.

The family of 12, who lived in Jixi City, northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province, gathered for breakfast on October 5. Nine of them ate homemade noodles, known as Suantangzi, but the younger members of the family did not eat because they did not like the taste.

Suantangzi is a type of noodle made from fermented corn flour.

All nine felt bad a few hours after eating pasta. Eight of them died on October 11. A ninth member of the family, a 47-year-old woman named Li, was treated at the hospital but died on Monday.

Gao Fei, director of food safety at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in Heilongjiang, told the China News Service that acid poisoning from Bongkrek can often be fatal.

“It can seriously affect many organs, including the liver, kidneys, heart, and brain,” Gao said.
