Seven people vaccinated with AstraZeneca serum have died from blood clots in the UK, out of a total of 30 cases identified so far, the British Medicines and Medicines Regulation Agency (MHRA) said on Saturday, according to AFP, taken over by Agerpres. .

Of the 30 cases announced as of March 24, “sadly, seven died,” the MHRA said in a statement to AFP.

The regulatory agency said it had so far received reports of 22 cases of cerebral venous thrombosis and another eight cases of thrombosis associated with a platelet deficiency, out of a total of 18.1 million doses administered.

“Our in-depth analysis of these reports continues,” MHRA Director June Raine said in a statement, adding that no similar cases have been reported with the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine.

Opinion on side effects

In an opinion on the side effects of vaccines administered in the country this Thursday, the MHRA highlighted that “the risk of formation of this type of blood clot is very low.”

More generally, “the number and nature of side effects reported so far are not unusual compared to other types of commonly used vaccines,” the regulatory agency added.

The AstraZeneca vaccine, developed in conjunction with the University of Oxford, has been under suspicion in several countries following severe cases of blood clots. As a result, some countries have decided not to administer the serum to people under a certain age.

The Netherlands announced on Friday that it will temporarily suspend immunization with this serum for those under 60, following a similar decision made by Germany on Tuesday.

With 127,000 deaths associated with COVID-19, the UK is running one of the most advanced vaccination campaigns in the world, with more than 31.3 million first doses and around five million booster doses administered since the beginning of December.
