Renate Wedel has lived in the six-village Waldsolms Hessian commune with her husband, Alfred Wedel, since 1975.

Alfred was a successful stock investor and died in 2014, and Renate, who had been cared for in a nursing home in Frankfurt since 2016, died in December 2019 at the age of 81.

In April of this year, the commune announced that Renate had left them a bank balance, shares and valuables.

Renate’s sister, who was the original heir, had already passed away, local media reported.

The news surprised the authorities. “At first I thought this was just not possible, I thought it was a wrong comma, that something was wrong,” said local mayor Bernd Heine.

The community is obliged to use the assets, valued at 6.2 million euros, for “community facilities and infrastructures”.
