Sarah McBride became the first person to openly transsexual and enter the United States Senate after winning the Delaware state election on Tuesday.

She thus becomes the transgender person who accesses the highest position in the state so far. McBride will replace Democratic Senator Harris McDowell, who has not run for office.

Sarah McBride, 30, already made history at the 2016 Democratic Convention, when she was the first transgender person to speak at such an important national event.

Sarah McBride was born in Wilmington, Delaware, the city where she resides, and Joe Biden, a Democratic candidate in the 2020 presidential election. She worked in 2010 with Beau Biden, the eldest son of Joe Biden, who died of brain cancer.

In 2014, Sarah McBride married Andrew Cray, another LGBT rights activist who died of cancer four days after their wedding.

Four other transgender people are running in Congress this year: Danica Roem in Virginia, Brianna Titone in Colorado, and Lisa Bunker and Gerri Cannon in New Hampshire.
