The late Rep. John Lewis, a Democrat from Georgia, will be in the state at the Capitol Rotunda Monday through Wednesday next week, as reported by Fox News.
The coffin will arrive on Monday and will be carried in procession through the city, with stops at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Monument, near the National Mall.
Then Lewis’s coffin will go up to the Capitol Square on the East Front and an honor guard will climb the steps to the Capitol, as reported by Fox News. Due to the pandemic, there will be a small ceremony inside. Members will receive time slots to pay their respects. Unlike most ceremonies when someone is in state, the public will not be able to enter the Capitol due to the coronavirus.
However, the honor guard will then escort Lewis’s coffin to the Eastern Front Portico, where the public will be able to walk around to pay their respects until dusk Monday.
Lewis’s coffin will be brought back to the Rotunda at night and then returned to the Eastern Front Portico for another day of observation on Tuesday. The honor guard will then reposition the coffin inside the Rotunda by dusk.
JOHN LEWIS, ICON OF CIVIL RIGHTS, CONGRESS FOR 33 YEARS, DEAD AT 80
More than 30 people have remained in state at the Capitol Rotunda, most recently the late Senator John McCain and the late Representative Elijah Cummings.
Lewis was a prominent civil rights activist and symbol of the movement in the House of Representatives during his 33 years in office. He died last week after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year.
Lewis was considered one of the movement’s most influential leaders, similar to Martin Luther King Jr., Whitney Young, A. Phillip Randolph, James Farmer, and Roy Wilkins. His death sparked public condolences from across the political spectrum.
