Washington Many Protestants surrounded US Senator Rand Paul as he left the White House for the Republican National Convention early Friday, called for the lawmaker from Kentucky to recognize the shot by Breonna Taylor.
On video posted on social media, dozens of people showed up after midnight confronting Paul and his wife, who were flanked by Metro Police.
Protestants could be shouted “No Justice No Peace” and “Say Her Name” before appearing briefly to collide with an officer, pushing him and his bike backwards, sending the officer into Paul’s shoulder.
Officers called for protesters to step back and get on the sidewalk.
Taylor’s name has been a hot topic among protesters during recent protests against racial inequality and police brutality. The 26-year-old medical emergency technician was shot multiple times March 13 when police officers burst into her Louisville apartment with a no-knock recommendation during a drug investigation.
The order to search her home was in connection with a suspect who did not live there, and no drugs were found.
After the meeting Friday morning, Paul tweeted that he had been “attacked” by a “crazy mob” one block from the White House, later thanking the police for “saving his life.”
It was not clear whether Protestants made physical contact with Paul. The senator and his wife continued to walk and appeared to have suffered no injuries.
The senator, who was wearing a mask as he walked down the street, left the White House after President Donald Trump accepted the GOP nomination on the Southlawn earlier Thursday.
Trump was criticized for shifting his own administration pandemic guidelines by talking for more than an hour against a tightly packed, largely maskless audience.
Videos show that other participants were confronted by Protestants after leaving the event.
