When you start working in digital media, one of the first things you learn is to never read the comments. Even if you only report the heaviest of facts or share the mildest of opinions, the comment section is still not somewhere where you want to spend a lot, if any, time.

Unfortunately, it sounds like no one has ever told Prince Harry. According to Find freedom, an upcoming biography of the Sussexes by reporters Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand, Prince Harry often reads the comments on articles about him and Meghan, some of which can be particularly annoying as well as racist.

“Rolling on his iPhone, he sometimes could not stop himself from reading the comments on the articles,” read a new excerpt from the book, published in the The time.

“Harry regrets opening the link,” the authors note. “His stomach tied in the same knot every time he saw these kinds of remarks. ‘It’s a sick part of the society we live in today, and no one does anything about it,’ he went on.” “Where is the positive? Why is everyone so miserable and angry?”

Prince Harry’s habit of reading coverage about his life, work and relationships (whether it is pleasant or not) is not new.

Duncan Larcombe, who also wrote a biography of Harry, and once served as royal editor at the Sun., told earlier Cosmopolitan UK that the Prince read about himself “religiously.”

“I was always surprised at just how religiously he leaked things written about him,” Larcombe said in a 2017 interview. “I think Prince Charles has not read a newspaper for years, but Harry, and to some extent William, they read almost everything that is written there. It is a sign that he is probably deeply concerned about what people think of him.”

These accounts also follow with an anecdote shared by Daily mail reporter Rebecca English earlier this year.

“Just wanted to see what you had to say about me,” Harry said as she watched over the computer of English while working during a visit to Lesotho in 2006. “I always want to know what people say about me.”
