PG&E warns last night of rolling blackouts in three Bay Area counties

Based on current energy consumption forecasts, the California Independent System Operator (ISO) is likely to target PG&E to detect rotating power outages in the early to late Sunday evening in parts of the province of San Francisco, San Mateo and Contra Costa, causing an estimate 210,000 customers.

None of the outages are expected to last into the night hours.

Stops will take an estimated one to two hours. PG & E’s Emergency Operations Center has been activated since Sunday evening, and is working closely with the ISO to support these temporary outages.

Rotary strikes are necessary if the independent system administrator is unable to meet reservation power requirements. During these “Stage 3” emergencies, the ISO will typically order state utilities, including PG&E, to reduce electrical charge by disabling service, in order to prevent major power outages.

Tools will not be able to warn customers in advance.

These rotating outlets differ from the PG&E “Public Safety Power Shutoffs” referred to under specific conditions with high fire threat, and are not related to problems with PG & E’s equipment or the ability to supply local energy.

PG&E customers are “strongly encouraged” to save electricity at least Wednesday night through measures, including raising thermostats to at least 78 degrees, with a ceiling fan to improve air conditioner performance, cover windows, prevent oven use, open the refrigerator as few times as possible and use washing machines and dishwashers early in the morning or after 10 o’clock
