The call will happen at 2:30 p.m., said sources on Capitol Hill and in the White House. It will mark the first time Pelosi has spoken to White House negotiators since August 7 about a pandemic relief package.

But the two sides stand far apart. House Democrats passed a massive $ 340 trillion coronavirus package in May, but it was rejected by Republicans in the White House and the Senate. Senate Republic offered a $ 1.1 trillion package – including a $ 10 billion boost for the U.S. Postal Service – but Meadows is striving for an even slimmer bill.

Meadows spent several days trying to skip conversation talks with Pelosi. Last weekend, after meeting with lawmakers on Capitol Hill, Meadows fell without notice through the speaker’s office and tried to get a meeting with her. He was told she was busy.

Meadows appeared at a Politico event on Wednesday, saying he asked his staff to travel to Pelosi this week. Those efforts have paid off, but Meadows said he was “not optimistic” about reaching an agreement.

He said he thinks Pelosi “will end until the end of September” so she can tie the stimulus package to a must-pass bill to prevent a government shutdown before the election.

Pelosi has signaled that Democrats are ready to drop the price tag of their $ 1 billion package if Republicans agree to boost their $ 1 billion package.
