HOUSTON – Baylor College of Medicine researchers said a new mutated coronavirus strain can spread more easily but does not appear to be more serious.
It is not abnormal to see viral strains evolve, said Dr. Pedro Piedra, professor of molecular virology and microbiology at BCM.
“This is not unique to SARS-CoV2,” said Piedra. “This is actually part of what we see with many outbreaks.”
However, the new dominant strain appears to be more transmissible.
“If you look at the laboratory data, it suggests that it’s about three to four times more efficient in its ability to infect,” Piedra said.
With researchers already rushing to find a COVID-19 vaccine, could a mutation delay them? Piedra said no.
“The antibodies will be able to effectively neutralize the virus, whether it contains the mutation or not,” Piedra said.
Over time, humans will adapt to evolving SARS-CoV2 as the herd’s immunity increases. Until then, Piedra said it’s important for everyone to continue wearing face covers, keep a safe distance, and limit social interactions.
“We are the ones with the social obligation to stop the spread of this virus. Otherwise, it will stay and cause a lot of chaos, ”Piedra said.
