A Coop Obs store in Oslo filled the wrong alcohol dispenser with a faulty drain cleaner on Friday, and four people were sent to the emergency room. – It was a pure accident, says Coop’s communications manager.
Coop communications manager Harald Kristiansen confirms the error to Aftenposten.
Bottles of hand alcohol are stored at the information desk at the Coop Obs store on Alna in Oslo, says Kristiansen. A customer had stopped and returned Mudin’s drain cleaner to him, so the bottle with highly corrosive content was together with the bottles with handheld alcohol.
Then an employee who had to fill the empty dispenser took the wrong bottle.
– A customer who used the handheld alcohol dispenser reacted to the fact that it smelled strange and pungent, and thus the confusion was discovered, Kristiansen tells VG.
– Definitely painful
Prior to this, another customer had managed to use the drain cleaner dispenser, along with two employees.
– The Poison Information Center, the police 113 and the Norwegian Labor Inspection Authority were called. All were asked to rinse their hands with water and given good guidance on what to do. The four were then taken by taxi to the emergency room, Kristiansen says.
The communications chief tells VG that the four are fine according to the conditions, and they have gone for a check-up on Saturday and will go for a new check-up on Monday.
– But it is clear that it was an unpleasant incident, which was undoubtedly painful. But when things started to go wrong, the staff made everything right.
New routines
The store is now introducing new routines on how to exchange and store isopropyl alcohol. Kristiansen says the mistake will have no consequences for the employee.
– It was a pure accident and the person in question is very upset. You’ve probably had a lot to do and the bottles are very similar. But it will not happen and we must prevent this from happening again.
Kristiansen says they have a good dialogue with the two clients and that they will be able to cover all expenses and compensate them for the unpleasant experience.
