Work life, Unemployment | Egil (49) and a quarter of a million Norwegians will not receive holiday pay next year: – Dønn unfair

– Those who have lost their jobs and are laid off due to the crown are among those who pay the highest price.

FIGGJO (Nettavisen Økonomi 🙂 Normally around 80 employees work on the factory premises. Some put porcelain in the 60-meter hot oven, while others decorate award-winning household items that are shipped to different parts of the world.

Many collect Figgjo AS plates and cups. And the employees are very proud of the nearly 80-year-old design company.

But on March 12, there was an abrupt end to domestic and foreign orders, and 90 percent of the staff were laid off in no time. A crisis group of around ten employees has kept the wheels rolling. The rest, for the most part, have been fired in the last eight months.

Egil Nevland (49) and his wife have both been fired. He is worried about the future.

– It was a shock. I have worked to ban gas for 30 years and have never been fired or anything like that. Now my whole life has stopped and I feel like it’s getting worse. The psyche is struggling, and I can’t imagine having other jobs than this, says Nevland, who is a department manager at Figgjo.

Don’t get vacation pay

The government and the FRP eliminated the entitlement to the vacation supplement on unemployment benefits six years ago.

Labor leader Jonas Gahr Støre has taken a hard line against the government, demanding answers on why the unemployed and laid-off are not entitled to vacation pay (see video above).

Conservative Heidi Nordby Lunde responded by calling the Labor Party’s proposal to pay holidays for the unemployed “ko-kooo.”

Figgjo employees are concerned about what the summer will bring. It is too late to say in June. They must speak now so that politicians change their minds.

– Those laid off must receive vacation pay and a longer rest period. If not, we will be out of money and out of work this summer. We are not the only key company in Norway that is now seeking layoffs. Now the government must stick its finger out, says Figgjo employee and union delegate Gry Espeland (47).

Also for Torkel Kyllingstad (49), the uncertainty is great. He’s been laid off 100 percent since March and fears firing and a summer without pay. Before, the maintenance worker saved on stocks, but has sold them to pay the bills.

– I would like the dismissal period to be extended until March. So I hope we know more about the vaccine and how we will get back to normal, says Kyllingstad.

– It’s about justice

The leader of the energy industry, Frode Alfheim, is very clear that the government and the FRP should re-enforce vacation pay for those laid off, and that it is urgent.

– Laid off workers are already paying a high price for the crown, and when it is also said that they will not be able to afford to take a vacation until next year, it is completely unfair, says Alfheim and continues:

– The demand is for justice. Those who have lost their jobs and are laid off due to the crown are among those who pay the highest price. When society stands up for business owners and companies, jaggu stands up for workers.

Figures obtained by the Labor Party show that 266,000 Norwegians in 2021 could have received vacation pay for 9.5% of the unemployment benefits they received up to 2020. The sum amounts to around NOK 12,900 per beneficiary.

– I don’t understand that Solberg is holding back. The government does not take workers into account. We are not employed in a company that does not have the right to life because we do not make money, but because our customers cannot place orders right now. So the government must believe in and help workers at key companies like us, says Figgjo employee Gry Espeland.
