Inger Lise Blyverket has never had a career plan, but the path is created as she walks.
The deadline to apply for higher education in the fall is due soon. Although the world is chaotic and the future seems uncertain, the possibilities are many. The online newspaper talks to famous faces with different backgrounds about what they thought about career options at a young age and what they think is a good idea to study now..
Today she is the executive director of the Consumers Council. The supreme leader of the body that aims to transfer power to consumers, and who is constantly and constantly in the media and warns of consumer traps.
But this was not where he planned to end. In fact, he had no other plan than to have fun when he started studying at Blinderen in Oslo in the 80s.
– I had no career plans over my head and I had no big dreams. I really wanted to live the student life and felt older when I moved to study, she tells Nettavisen.
He chose topics on impulse and according to his own interests. Blyverket ended up studying French, Nordic and Sociology, graduating with a BA from the University of Oslo in 1992.
– I started working as a teacher while still studying, and continued as a teacher in upper secondary school after having completed both the bachelor’s degree and PPU education, she says.

The springboard of your career
After a few years in the teaching profession, she was given an opportunity that she couldn’t say no to. She was asked to be a union delegate for the Oslo teachers.
– The smartest thing I’ve ever done is never say no to a challenge. The offer came to me suddenly and I had no idea what I was looking for, but I never regret it, he says.
This was the stepping stone in his career, and the reason he ended up in the job he has today. He learned a lot about politics and influence, regulations and working for some interests.
Plus, he got a great network, which has been worth its weight in gold on the way forward.
– I couldn’t train for the job I have today. It is the sum of all the choices I have made in my career and the experiences I have had, says the Chief Consumer Officer.
He has never regretted any of the decisions he made. The options felt good there and then, and what he has learned in the positions he has held, he has needed in his later career.

– Always say yes!
Genuine curiosity has been important, and there are two things in particular that Blyverket has learned that she will share with others who want to be successful in work life.
– Always say yes if you are asked to take on new tasks, even if you are not sure you want to master them. Also, I recommend that you raise your hand if you think you have something to contribute, he says.
It was the desire to try something new and get new challenges that made Blyverket accept the job as a shop steward, even though the teaching job was exciting.
Blyverket has been a member of the board of directors of Utdanningsforbundet and has also been the director of policy and negotiations at the main organization Virke, to name a few of the jobs she has held.
In 2018, she assumed the position of director of the Consumer Council and, at the same time, has developed her experience by obtaining a master’s degree in administration.

Likes to make things happen
– No wonder it ended up at the intersection of science and politics. I’m not a bureaucrat, but rather an activist who likes to make things happen, says Blyverket.
– Working with the influence of interest politics affects me deeply. I believe in working for the community, he explains.
Through both work and play, he has become involved in the community. She has worked on behalf of employees, employers and now consumers, but in her spare time she has also been involved in the Gay Movement.
– It is important to have spokespersons for political interests that move society forward, says Blyverket.
She is very happy with the outcome of her career and would not have chosen much differently today than she did more than 30 years ago.
– I would go back to studying sociology or other social studies, because it is useful to understand how society works. But it’s not enough. It probably would have filled me with law and economics as well, says Blyverket.
She believes that this is a basic issue that must be known to influence society.
– You must understand how regulations are created and how they govern the development of society. And you only realize that when you also understand how the economy is connected to everything, he explains.
– Ask for help
Over a long career you will, of course, make mistakes, but there is something you can learn from. Therefore, it is difficult for Blyverket to point out the dumbest thing he has ever done in his career.
However, one of the things he learned is that you, as a leader, must be receptive and dare to apologize if you have made a mistake.
– However, the most important thing I have learned is to ask the people around you. I’ve learned a lot by asking other leaders for help, but also my colleagues, he says.
– My colleagues are the ones who drive me to work today. They are extremely talented and dedicated people. I experience being in an informed community where I learn something new every day, says Blyverket.
Move power
As a Director of Consumers, she absorbs all the knowledge of the people around her and must gather it in the right way so that the Consumers Council can fulfill its social mission: Transfer power to consumers.
– Merchants traditionally have more power than the consumer, and can make it difficult for us to make informed decisions and the best purchase. We can be tricked into making purchases and transactions the scope of which we do not understand and in which we become the losing party, explains Blyverket.
The task of the Consumer Council is to make it easier for consumers to make good decisions and to help companies that violate consumer regulations also to be punished for it.
There is no doubt that the experiences you have gained during the last 30 years in your working life have been very useful to you. The Chief Consumer Officer also advises others to take a risk and try something new in work life.
– I walk on the go. Your basic education is just a stepping stone beyond, says Blyverket.
